Iced Tea 3 Ways: Beat the Heat!

$

0

Hi, everyone!

It is HOT here in the West Chester area…my thermometer says 89.9, but it feels like 100°F! What’s it like in your area? Hot? Humid? Are you looking for a way to beat the heat? I have two refreshing little words for you: Iced Tea.

Iced Tea 3 Ways

I think everyone has their own special iced tea recipe…my grandmother used to steep loose black tea leaves on her stove for hours. Then, she strained it, added LOTS of sugar, and I thought it was the best drink in the world. But what about making flavored teas like you see in the photo above?

Red Berry Iced Tea

Ingredients:

  • 6 red herb tea bags
  • 4 oz fresh raspberries
  • 8 oz fresh strawberries
  • 8 oz fresh watermelon

Directions:

  1. Bring 6 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, remove the pot from the heat and add the tea bags. Let steep for 5 minutes (more or less depending on the strength of tea desired) and then remove the tea bags from the water. If desired, sweeten with sugar, honey, or agave syrup, to taste.
  2. Pour the tea into a pitcher, refrigerate until chilled, and add the fresh fruit when ready to serve.

Mojito Iced Green Tea

Ingredients:

  • 6 green tea bags
  • 2 lemons, sliced
  • 2 limes, sliced
  • 1 small bunch fresh basil leaves
  • 1 small bunch mint leaves

Directions:

  1. Prepare the green tea, as per above instructions.
  2. Gently crush the basil and mint leaves in a mortar and pestle or a small ceramic bowl with the back of a wooden spoon, to release the fresh oils. Set aside the muddled herbs.
  3. Pour the green tea into a pitcher, refrigerate until chilled, and then add lemon slices, lime slices, and the muddled fresh herbs. Serve chilled.

Orange Chai Iced Tea

Ingredients:

  • 6 chai tea bags
  • 24 oz orange juice
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 oranges, sliced

Directions:

  1. Prepare the chai tea, as per above instructions.
  2. Bring the orange juice to a gentle simmer in a sauce pot. Place the cinnamon sticks into the orange juice, turn off the heat, and let steep for 5 minutes. Remove the cinnamon sticks from the orange juice. Combine the chai tea and the flavored orange juice, and then refrigerate until chilled. Add the orange slices and serve chilled.

You can get the Primula Fruit Infusion Pitcher (K39140) on QVC.com. And, remember you can always access recipes like my Iced Tea 3 Ways on one central page…just search “Jill’s Recipes” and you can sort by category. To print, look for the handy little icon at the top right of the recipe page.

Stay cool out there!

Hi everyone!! I'm so happy to be back at the Q after spending some quality time with Bree at home. While it was hard leaving her, I'm so so so glad to be back to work and shopping with you!! I know I have a lot to catch you up on, but I wanted to start by sharing all of our photos from Bree's first visit to the beach!

It was a full fledge family affair and not to mention the perfect way to end my time away from work. Here are some pictures from our vacation!

I took this picture to send to Bree's Aunt K and Uncle D. Since we were headed to the beach, she had to wear the new sailor outfit they bought for her!

Someone was very excited to be in a bathing suit!

Classic Bree catching zzz's on the beach!

Oh and don't forget cousin Drew partaking in his favorite past time as well! Watching these guys sleep makes me really regret not taking advantage of nap time when I was little!

Meme and Bree!

Took a break from the sand to grab a drink... After all this is vacation!

Here's a picture of little Drew in the pool for the first time with Mommy! Look how happy he looks!!

I had to take this picture. Steve was confiding in Bree to help him choose what to have for breakfast. This went on for quite some time...

Until Bree made this face and the decision was final!

We wrapped up our lovely vacation with a delicious dinner! Looking forward to many more trips to the beach with Bree!

All Decked Out--3 Fun Ideas for Your Summer Parties!

Hi, everyone!

Our goal for the month of July was to help you get “All Decked Out” for your summertime parties…how am I doing? :) Ready for a few more ideas? Here we go!

Sometimes I write you volumes here in my blog…lots of instructions, lots of tips, but everything you need to know is right there in those videos! And really, isn’t it easier to show you how to create something? As often as we can, I’ll share those videos with you.

The only other thing I’ll add today is that when I invite guests over for outdoor parties, I always have some outdoor flameless candles out on my deck to add some ambiance in the dusk and evening—they’re just so carefree and beautiful. The taller the candle, the bigger the impression. But you need a few little ones to create that balanced look I talk about so often. I also swear by those indoor/outdoor ottomans by Valerie…talk about instant storage, instant seating, anything you need. I’ve got several of these ottomans inside and out. I know you’ll find 1,000 uses for them like I have.

Mark your calendars for a live You’re Home with Jill next Wednesday at 7pm ET!!

Crayon Art!!

$

Chelsea found this really cool art project on Pinterest!!  She wanted to create some colorful artwork for her room.  There is nothing more colorful than CRAYONS!!!

You will need:

Stretched canvas

Crayons- depending on the look you are going for you can use   new crayons or old broken pieces

Glue gun/glue sticks

Blow dryer

Chelsea started with a stretched canvas.  Select the colors you want to use and design.

Use a glue gun to adhere the crayons to the canvas.

Once your canvas is covered and the glue is dry, use a blow dryer to melt the crayons.  They will begin to slowly drip down the canvas.  You can direct the flow of the melted crayon by changing the direction of the blow dryer.  It is really cool.

Be sure to cover the area you are working in to protect against over spray.

And.....Viola!!!

Great job, Chelsea!!

It's Christmas in July(R) on QVC...Why Not Throw a Party!

Hi, everyone!

Last weekend was QVC’s very first You’re Home with Jillweekend and I thought it was just fabulous, if I do say so myself! We welcomed folks from all over the country—as far away as Arizona and Texas! Everyone really seemed to enjoy the beauty of Longwood Gardens and then we had a great dinner that night, fun jewelry exchanges, and we saw the saw the fountain show that evening. I think the highlight for me and all the girls—and one brave husband—was going to the Downton Abbey display at Winterthur. It was so fun to see the costumes and relive our favorite moments from Downton Abbey. We had a great live audience for my show on Sunday and I made sure to came in early to give guests a VIP tour of QVC. So many people thanked me for a great weekend, but I really didn’t do anything except shout some ideas. The REAL thanks goes to all the folks at QVC who made the weekend happen, so THANK YOU to them.

As lots of you already know from watching your favorite shows, QVC is having its Christmas in July® sale. It’s so much fun to walk into a winter wonderland at the “office” and then walk outside to a balmy summer day! I hope you’ll join me on Wednesday at 7pm ET for a CIJ edition of You’re Home with Jill! So many items in the show are things I personally designed so I’m really proud of them and excited to see what you think.

I’ll also show you a Pool Party DIY project we made in an episode of YHJ for QVC Plus®—which, by the way, you can still watch on QVC.com. Here’s how you make my Drink Umbrella Wreath. Picture this on your front door!

Drink Umbrella Wreath

Since this Friday is July 25 and Christmas is officially six months away, I hope you’ll consider a Christmas in July party this weekend. A few summers ago, I was vacationing with my family at Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. I remember driving down this street…all of our windows were down… and out of nowhere, we heard Christmas music. We had to see where it was coming from so we drove towards it and found a neighborhood Christmas block party—they had their lights out, music blaring, everyone was wearing red and green—it was awesome.

Besides music, lights, and ugly sweaters, here are few more CIJ ideas you could try, whether indoors or out.

  • Drink frozen hot chocolate—and I just so happen to have an amazing recipe on QVc.com. Have one neighbor make a batch of my frozen hot chocolate for everyone and have everyone bring a Christmas mug or martini glass. Then, let guests customize their drink with marshmallows, whipped cream, cinnamon, peppermint candies, or even leftover drink umbrellas from your wreath project.

Frozen Hot Chocolate

  • Play in the snow. In the hot summer weather, making snow sculptures and eating snow cones would be refreshing and fun. Use the snow cone maker to give you “snow” to decorate and play with. You could also have a snowball fight with those great indoor snowballs we have here at QVC.
  • Decorate cookies. Christmas and cookies go hand-in-hand, so get out your cookie cutters—holiday or summery inspired—and make some of your favorite recipes. When the cookies are done, let everyone decorate them with pre-bought frosting. If you make your own buttercream, it might get too melty if it’s really hot. Also stay away from chocolate chips but use candy-coated M&Ms and things like sugar sprinkles.
  • Have a movie marathon. Whoever has the biggest garage door wins! Set up a projector and show It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, A Christmas Story…all the best Christmas movies so everyone can watch. But, you’ll need to work out a schedule with the music, because you HAVE to play Christmas music. Maybe start the movies when the party starts to wind down.

I’ll see you Wednesday at 7pm ET!

From my home to yours,
—Jill

An Interview With Stacey Stauffer and Alberti Popaj

An interview with Stacey Stauffer and Alberti Popaj by Anne Creedon

When I have the privilege to interview our hosts, they’re always extremely nice—which is probably why our customers love our hosts and guests so much! I feel like I get a sneak peek into their personalities when I sit across the table from them. Some folks are larger than life, others are quietly sweet, and some of them exude a cheerful disposition that makes you feel like you’ve known them for years. When interviewing two of our newest program hosts, Stacey Stauffer and Alberti Popaj, I felt like I was with friends and almost forgot I was conducting an interview!

Anne: Stacey, you were a TV news anchor/reporter before coming to QVC. What was that like?

Stacey: It was an incredible adrenalin rush and an amazing career. My goal was always to become a reporter and anchor in Philadelphia, and I’m one of the luckiest women in the world to have reached that goal. But having my boys, Ben and Larry, planted the seed in the back of my mind that I may not want to do news forever. Even in local news, I could never guarantee my son that I could make it to his baseball game, so I thought there had to be something I could do where I’d have a little more down time. So I credit them for opening my eyes so I could jump into this challenging new world—a dream I never knew I had!

Anne: Alberti, some of our customers will recognize you because you were an on-air guest at QVC. How was that experience?

Alberti: I loved it! Every moment I spent in this building as a guest was a happy moment, which is what made my decision to move here from the West Coast an easy one. I’m from Los Angeles and Palm Springs, so there’s a little bit of difference in the climate! I moved here on January 4, 2014, and on January 5 the polar vortex shifted. That morning, I was running late and found my car’s windshield covered in ice. I’m originally a New Yorker, but I didn’t learn to drive until I moved to California. I had to call my dad and ask, “How do you get ice off a windshield?”

Anne: How is being a program host different from your previous television experiences?

Stacey: In journalism, it’s very much about just giving the facts. You keep your opinion out of it and don’t let it influence the story. At QVC, we give viewers the information, but we also give our ideas and opinions.

Alberti: I’m on the air more frequently now so I have more of a relationship with the customer. I get to share what I like about products and what I think they’re going to like.

Anne: What was your first impression of QVC?

Stacey: This is Disney World! I was absolutely astounded by the energy that almost knocks you over when you step in the door. All the employees are happy and love what they do.

Alberti: The happiest place on earth! Everybody is happy and smiling! And I would describe it as a family, because from the second I walked in I felt welcomed, invited, liked, and supported.

Anne: Tell us about some of your favorite things. Pizza topping?

Stacey: It depends on my mood. It could be an onion and cheese night or spinach, ricotta, and garlic—lots of garlic!

Anne: Ice cream flavor?

Alberti: Ben & Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie! It’s the best ice cream you will ever eat because it’s mint ice cream with Oreos crushed up inside.

Anne: Hobbies?

Stacey: Something I really love to do is bird watching. But not just any birds—birds of prey! One of the top items on my bucket list is to see a bald eagle in the wild. Every September is a big migration time for bald eagles at this place called Hawk Mountain in Kempton, Pennsylvania. Wouldn’t you know, after years of going, something like 20 bald eagles flew through either the day before or the day after I was there?

Alberti: I love to work out and do any physical sport. And I love to grill and bake. Anything that happens on top of the stove isn’t my thing, but grilling and baking covers all you need—the cornbread and the ribs!

Anne: Last, but not least, what are some of your favorite QVC

products?

Stacey: It’s changing! Having worked in television news and makeup being a part of being on the air, I came to QVC geared toward loving the beauty products. But now that I’m here, I love learning about things like garden tools and gardening— which I’m horrible at! But as I’m presenting these kinds of products, I’m learning while I’m on air and I love that.

Alberti: Oh gosh, what’s not to like? I love philosophy*, which is my daily ritual when it comes to my body wash, lotion, and fragrance. And I love my Little Giant* ladder because I just moved into my new house and that’s helping me more than ever. Everybody needs one!

Welcome Stacey and Alberti!

Frozen Frenzy

My kids are losing their minds!  Granted they are four and five years old so that’s not a new thing in our home, but right now they are planted in front of the television watching Nancy Hornbeck sing, "Let It Go", singing a chorus of “I want it now!!!” right along with her.

Grace & Georgia are used to seeing mommy on TV.  As infants they watched me, swaddled in their daddy’s arms, early in the morning, while I delivered the morning weather for ABC news. Now they occasionally catch me on Q check or Saturday Morning Q when I’m on QVC.  It’s no big thing for them, so the fact that they have actually stopped and are giving their undivided attention to “mommy’s work” means somethings up.

What’s up, is Frozen.  Anna & Elsa came into our lives in the dark, cold days of early 2014 and they transformed my little girls.  Life turned into the movie in our home.  They were using blue blankets to dress up like Elsa, singing the songs, and wearing white gloves to control their “magic.”  We even managed to find an online copy of the movie that my girls would do any chore, at any time of the day, to earn the right to watch.

Fast forward to the spring, and my mother-in-law planned a trip for the girls to Disney World.  All they wanted to do was see Elsa & Anna, dress up like them, talk about them…but we couldn’t find any Frozen dresses let alone a t-shirt or a pendant.  Even at the park!  There was nothing! Disney had just missed a huge opportunity in our opinion.  My mother-in-law was willing to pay whatever, to make her granddaughters' dream come true.  Finally she ended up special ordering these gorgeous Elsa dresses made by some woman overseas.

That’s the dress on Georgia on the right.  She never takes it off!!!

Since then we have continued to crave anything Frozen, and little by little we have seen more pop up but when QVC launched the Frozen collection on July 1st it was like a dream come true!

We have watches of both Olaf and Anna & Elsa

Wall art of the both as well.

The Olaf stuffy.

And the Elsa dress that cost more than 200 dollars less than the one my mother-in-law had to special order, but that sold out in one 5 minute airing!

We even have the movie that started it all.

And of course the pendant that had my girls mesmerized!

It comes in Olaf as well as Anna & Elsa.

We also had dolls that I hope we can get back in stock, and just about all the frozen items are on their second, third, fourth advanced order, but if you can get them, and at this price, my goodness they are worth the wait!!!

My aunties managed to advanced order my girls the pendants, and watches and the dress (before it sold out.) I can’t wait to see their faces when they open these up on Christmas (if we can wait that long.)  It’s no exaggeration that these Frozen toys are  going to be some of the hottest and most coveted toys for little girls and even boys (Olaf is a riot!) this Christmas.  Those dresses are going to be a hit on Halloween.  If I think that that my kiddos are loosing their cute little minds right now watching the presentation on television, imagine what kind of crazy will ensue when they open the real thing.  Don’t you want to be the family member that gets the kids the pony for Christmas ?  In this case anything Frozen is the Pony.

See more of my crazy kids, and crazy life daily on my facebook page www.facebook.com/kerstinlindquistqvc  and on Twitter www.twitter.com/kerstinlindqvc and of course Togather.com

Blessings,

Kerstin Lindquist

Day Trippin’

I didn’t want to call this blog stay-cation again so I am going with “Day Trippin’ because that is what we did for the last 2 weeks.

We started our vacation joining our good friend Holly celebrate her sons wedding.  Congratulations to John, Jeannie and family.  It was a beautiful ceremony.

Next it was time for our annual crab pickin’ with Leah, Lena, Barb & Aneesah.  Served with fried chicken, corn on the cob & shrimp salad!! Yum!! Avery photo bombed the picture but I think she was really more interested in stealing the crabs.

Picking crabs is rough on the fingernails, so off to the nail salon for mani’s & pedi’s.  Awww!

Day Trip!!!  Off to NY!!  My sister drove my mom, mother in law, Avery & me in one car.  Chelsea drove the other car with Lauren, Allen, & Kennady.  Chelsea’s first time driving in NY.  She get’s the “I survived driving in NY t-shirt”.

We had dinner at Tony’s, a family style Italian food restaurant near Times Square.

Then it was time to head to the theater.  We saw Wicked one night and then went to the matinee for The Lion King (still one of my all-time favorite shows. We were true tourist!  Took pictures in all of the usual places.

That was week #1

To start off week 2 Chelsea, Lauren & James headed to the Brandywine River for kayaking.  I was a bystander for that one.  My arms were to sore from playing tennis.  (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it)

Not only do I love to play tennis, I love to watch tennis!!  My sister, mom, mother-in-law & I went to Villanova University to watch the World Team Tennis featuring Venus Williams of the Washington Kastles vs. The Philadelphia Freedom.  It is a small intimate venue so you really connect with the players.  We had ringside seats.

We went to “Color Me Mine” for craft day.  You can pick from an assortment of unpainted pottery pieces, pick your colors and create original art.  They fire them and you pick them up in about a week.  I will post picture of them when they are finished.  Stay tuned.

Linda Davies hosted a graduation party for her son Kevin.  I can’t believe he is off to college.  Time for the mom’s to celebrate!!

We had a few days during the 2 weeks when the weather was not great but if the sun was out we touch full advantage.  Here are some ladies you might recognize.

In between all of our fun day trips, we spent time relaxing by the pool with family and friends. It is like having our own little bed & breakfast here.  We serve breakfast, lunch & dinner. We have tons of laundry to do daily, towels and bed linens etc., but we enjoy every second.

I missed all of you and can’t wait to get back to work.  Day Trippin’ is exhausting.  I will see you bright and early Monday morning for Fashionably Early.

Blessings,

Jayne

Snowball Cookies & Vacation Ornaments - Happy Christmas in July(R)!

Hi, everyone!

I took a look at my calendar today and did a double take…today is July 29! That means we’re almost into AUGUST! I just can’t believe how fast the summer is flying by…there’s so much I wanted to do with my kids before they go back to school!

I intend to make the most of the two days to come...especially because tomorrow there’s another episode of You’re Home with Jillat 7pm ET! AND, we have a few more days to celebrate Christmas in July®! So far, we’ve made a Drink Umbrella Wreath and I shared my recipe for Frozen Hot Chocolate. Tomorrow night, I’m going to show you another DIY project that you can make and enjoy now and then every Christmas to come...Vacation Ornaments.

Vacation Ornament

Aren’t they just so elegant? And imagine how nostalgic you’ll feel when you’re unwrapping all your ornaments in December and find this one. All the memories from your vacation will come flooding back and it’ll be summertime—if only for a second—all over again. Just one small word of caution before you bring the beach home. I’ve actually heard that some beaches frown upon folks removing sand and shells from the property. If you know your beach has such a guideline, simply recreate this from sand and shells you can find at your local craft store.

Now, back to the fun. After you’ve got all your supplies home, you’ll need a snack to munch on while you work. How do Snowball Cookies sound?

Snowball Cookies

Snowball Cookies
Makes 24–36 cookies, depending on the size

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 6 Tbsp powdered sugar + extra for finishing

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Cream together the butter, shortening, and vanilla.  Stir in the flour, nuts, and powdered sugar and mix well.  Shape the dough into balls—my grandma always said, “smaller than a walnut, bigger than a cherry!”  Place the cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until the bottom of the cookies become light golden brown.  Be sure to watch them carefully, as these can burn quite easily.
  3. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and let cool slightly, just until the cookies can be handled. Roll them in the extra powdered sugar while they’re still warm.

My grandma made these cookies every Christmas and I’ve had similar cookies over the years…sometimes they’re called wedding cookies or tea cakes. But, my grandma mixed powdered sugar into the dough and it really sets these cookies apart. There’s that initial crispness when you take a bite, but then they just seem to melt in your mouth!

I’ll show you both projects tomorrow on You’re Home with Jill at 7pm ET. I hope you can join me!

From my home to yours,
—Jill

P.S. I nearly forgot! Our theme for August is “YHJ Inspired.” I don’t think you realize how much you all inspire me each and every day with your comments, suggestions, and posts. So I’d like to give YOU all a chance to shine. Send me photos of your kitchen—I’d love to see how you incorporated pops of color into your décor. I’m going to feature three of my favorites here in the blog, on the next episode of You’re Home with Jill, and on my social pages. Submit your photos to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and use #YHJInspired. Or, you can email them to us at yhj@qvc.com. Hurry—we need them by Thursday, 7/31. Thanks!

Dancing Sisters

$

Deirdre went to her first ballet recital before she was born! Her big sister Cara was performing about a month before Deirdre was born so it just seemed natural that as soon as she was old enough, she went to dance class too.  Growing up, Cara and Deirdre would perform numbers from classic musicals (Sound of Music, Meet Me in St. Louis) when they were about ages 7 and 2.  Most guests were treated to "So Long, Farewell..." from the Sound of Music as they headed out the door!  And, like all sisters, they had their moments, but the bond of dance has always been there for them and always will be!

If it was Cara who got Deirdre to start dancing, it was Deirdre who brought her big sister back. In seventh grade Cara decided to focus on swimming and left dancing.  She devoted herself to the pool just like she had to the dance floor.  In her freshman year of high school we all went to see Deirdre in her first Nutcracker. Cara was so moved, and later told me she wanted to go back to dance.  Her ballet mistress welcomed her back, but she had years to make up for and worked harder than I've ever seen her work.

If you told me then, that after missing years of dance, Cara would now be a professional ballerina with a contract with a well-known company, I would not have thought it was possible! But she never gave up, never stopped trying, and had the courage to pursue her dream.  Believe me, there were rough spots along the way, but she pushed through. She had near career ending surgery, had rejections and then many offers. Even now, as she is working on her first season in ballet, she is also pursuing a degree in Communications and Public Relations through Penn State World Campus.

And although Deirdre loves ballet too, her passion is lyrical and jazz.  She is a force in a tiny package, and comes home after hours of dance, puts on music, and keeps dancing! She also loves art, and is usually involved in a project or three at any given time! Deirdre shines on stage, and loves performing.  She also volunteers with the baby dancers who adorably call her "Miss Dee-dwa."

Dance has bonded me to my girls. I love that we can speak the same language.  They both thought it was cool that Mom knew how to sew pointe shoes without asking the teacher! I love watching them grow and pursue this art form that will bond them forever!

When we left Cara at the airport on her new adventure I was fine, until Deirdre collapsed in her big sisters arms and they both were crying.  Thank goodness for FaceTime and Skype, it makes the miles seem less far.

And no matter where they go in life, they will always be my baby ballerinas!!

Hi, everyone!

Happy August! Our “Get Inspired” month is officially underway. I talked about this idea a little in my last blog, but essentially, you all inspire me so much with your posts, comments, blog replies, and photos. I love seeing what you’re doing on social media and I want to highlight YOU this month...the moms, wives, and talented women out there who cook, craft, and make their houses homes. On Tuesday, I asked to see photos of your kitchens…I wanted to know how you incorporated a pop of color into your décor. And now…here are the results!

Sherry's Kitchen

This is Sherry’s beach-themed kitchen. She painted the walls aqua, the cabinets white, and then she painted the island yellow for a pop of color. LOVE, Sherry! You know how I love the beach…this is SO my style!

Sherry's Kitchen

This photo is also from a talented lady named Sherry! She painted her walls “Royal Garnet” last spring and said it’s given her the most color she’s ever had in the kitchen. I love how she has the Keurig, wood stove, and curtains to match—even the trash can matches!

Barbie's Kitchen

And last but not least, there’s Barbie’s kitchen. WOW, Barbie! She used her Raspberry Ice KitchenAid mixer as inspiration for her kitchen and I think it looks terrific!! Did you see the T.V. above the oven? How AWESOME! She can watch YHJ, In the Kitchen with David, and all her favorite shows as she cooks.

Thank you to everyone who shared photos—I was THRILLED that so many of you took the time to share your homes with us. So are you ready for your next challenge? I want to see how you recently re-decorated or updated a bedroom in your home. Did you get a new comforter and accents to match? Did you paint an accent wall? Let me see your ideas! Just like before, you can submit your photos to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter but be sure to use #YHJInspired so we can find them! Or, you can email your photos to us at yhj@qvc.com. We need them by Monday, August 11.

I’ll see you on Monday for a special You’re Home with Jill at 2pm ET—mark your calendars so you remember the special time!

From my home to yours,
—Jill

I’m sitting back and listening to a conversation at lunch.  Usually I’m the one talking, but no one here knows one another, so I am enjoying the sound of something other than my own voice. The brunette to my left is reliving the weeks after her premature boys were born and the desperation and loneliness she felt as the doctors piled on bad news. It takes her all of 30 seconds to get to the point, which is, she went to the internet and mommy blogs in order to find other parents like her who could give her hope and make her feel like she wasn’t alone.

I start crying into my quinoa and kale lunch.

It wasn’t the story, though sick babies will put me in tears every time, it was the fact that she found comfort with strangers online.  It reminded me of why I started blogging five years ago. It was the exact feelings I had when I was dealing with the third year of infertility and the terror of adoption.  No one was talking to me about this deep loss I was experiencing, at least not honestly, and the online community was just beginning to empower women to discuss the shame.  So I started writing. I put each brutal experience into words and found that I was not alone.

Hearing that mom of now healthy toddler boy’s talk about the comfort she found during the worst time of her life was a swift kick to my stomach from our heavenly father reminding me to keep on writing. Over the years, my blogs have been shared and read by hundreds of thousands of people. Before QVC I blogged for ABC news in San Diego. My stories have been picked up and shared on different websites and even quoted in Parenting Magazines. The letters and emails I get from women like me have kept me going. But, after five years of talking about and working through the pain, I sometimes wonder how long I can keep it up.

Being at one of the largest blogging and social media conferences in the world, BlogHer, really helped me take another look at why I write.

More than any other groups of people, bloggers have the ability to change the conversation.

We were asked to think about that for a minute, and you should too.  Journalists give us unbiased information, authors hand us something to read for entertainment or reference, but bloggers give us opinions and breach topics that many of us think about, but don’t have the courage to say out loud.  And then, in most cases, we all get a chance to comment.

Of course that comment section is one of the reasons I have contemplated shutting down my laptop and keeping my stories to myself. Kerry Washington (of Scandal, love that show don’t you?) was at the conference and she urged us to not read the comments. She said, “it’s brain clutter…it’s none of my business what you think of me.”

But, for most of us mortals, it’s hard to avoid reading what people write about you and not end up getting your feelings hurt. Still, it’s that same comment section that keeps me going. I thrive on hearing from those of you who find comfort in knowing someone else feels just like you do. We really aren’t that different.

In addition to being inspired to keep writing, I attended other sessions during the three day conference in San Jose, Ca. I took notes through grammar and structure classes (did you know there is now only one space after the period?!) I Heard from the leadership at Twitter (www.twitter.com/kerstinlindqvc by the way, i’d love for you to chat with me in 140 characters) and I vowed to protect my creativity by taking a “digital detox” day each week.

But, the highlight for me was listening to Arianna Huffington.

She is a verified media mogul and one of the most powerful women of our time, but she remains down to earth and kind. I felt like I was talking with one of my best friends, she even gave us all her email address. You don’t need to be a blogger to take what she said and apply it to your life, and I really feel like you can benefit from her advice; so here is what I learned.

“Stop worrying and get more sleep…When you get enough sleep you worry less.” (Now if you can tell me how to do that please!)

“Change the delusion that you need to burn out in order to succeed - that’s an illusion created by men.” (Amen!)

“Don’t do things that make you feel empty.” (Try it just for a day; it’s harder than you think.)

“Every day the world will grab you by the hand and tell you this or that is important and you must take your hand back, put it on your heart and say no this is important.” (You are enough.)

And finally……

“There is no good answer on the scale.” (enough said!)

Women like Arianna Huffington continue to change the conversation and get all of us thinking. I truly feel I have an ability to do that too. There are always going to be people just like me and that mother of premature twins, who will need the words of other women to remind them what they feel is normal.  To be assured we are not alone. I found a group of women who are out there 24/7/365 pouring out their hearts and I realize, none of us can stop, it’s who we are.

So, I’ll be here, blogging, talking, and telling stories, and likely crying in my quinoa. What I can’t promise is my grammar and structure will be any better going forward, but I’m hoping you will have a little mercy on me in the comment section.

Corie Clark.

I have posted more thoughts shared by Arianna Huffington and others like, Corie Clark - Southern California lifestyle blogger, on my facebook page www.facebook.com/kerstinlindquistqvc. I’d love for you to join me there. Be a part of the changing conversation and let me know what you want me blog about.

Stop worrying, get more sleep, turn off your phone, remember what’s important, and have a blessed day.

You're Home with Jill Weekend Recap...in Photos!

Hi, everyone!

It’s been a few weeks since our first You’re Home with Jill Weekend…but I have to tell you, I’m still over the moon about the entire event! I was (am) completely honored that so many of you wanted to come be a part of the weekend…and I’m so happy that everyone seemed to enjoy the daily events.  Here’s a peek into our adventures!

We started at Longwood gardens for drinks, dinner, and our first hellos!

Everyone seemed to enjoy getting a sneak peek at some of the new Christmas items I designed...and just being together!

After dinner, we watched the beautiful Longwood Gardens fountain and light show.

The next morning, we met at Winterthur Estate…the former home of Henry du Pont. Mr. du Pont was a huge supporter of the American arts…and the home is still decorated the way it was when he lived there decades ago.

Mr. du Pont loved to garden, too, and always had fresh flowers throughout the estate. But, he never mixed a bouquet of color. As you can see in this photo, there are lots of flowers, but only one color and kind in each vase.

I loved hearing the history of this home…there are many pieces at Winterthur that belonged to George and Martha Washington. I think that’s so cool!

But the REAL reason I wanted to bring my YHJ friends to Winterthur was to see the Downton Abbey Exhibit!

Costumes and props from the show…it was marvelous!

I loved being able to see all the intricate details of the dresses up close!

It was really fun to be with all the girls throughout the tour!

Later that night….live studio audience time! Here’s our YHJ studio selfie!!

On Sunday morning, I met everyone for a backstage tour of QVC and the YHJ set…and brought a surprise guest, my son, Trevor.

I can’t tell you enough how much I enjoyed meeting each and every person who came to the weekend…from 14 states, including Arizona, Georgia, Texas, and more. It was my pleasure to play hostess and I hope I get to do it again soon!

From my home to yours,
—Jill

These Boots Are Made For Wearing!

$

Favorite thing about fall shoes?? Boots! No longer just for work or snow, boots are always the number one footwear choice for fall.  And, they go back 1000's of years! The First "boots" showed up around 1000 BC, when an enterprising soul stitched a sandal to a legging to protect the ankle. First boots were born!  Whether we sported the go-go boots of the 60's (like Deirdre's retro dance number!) or cowboy boots even in the hottest weather, boots are a go-to in everybody's closet!

So - what are some of the top trends in boots this fall? (Warning, writing this blog led me to buy two pairs of boots - so read at your own risk!)

Low Heeled Boots: Coming off the comfy shoe craze of the summer, many of the top designers that used to send models down the runway in teetering heels, have opted of the low held boots. You'll find lots of options - especially from Clarks!

Strap Happy: Some of the freshest looks this fall are ankle boots with multi straps, like the Sole Society Portia Suede Caged High-Heeled Sandals and the Kensie Clive Suede Multi Strap Open Toe Shooties below.

Lace it Up: Any boot that laces, either for adjustment or just for show, is also a good choice this season - like the Clarks Bendables Nikki North Leather Lace-up Ankle Boots.

Interesting Ankles: The ankle boot is back, look for styles with cool buckles, interesting lines, and chunky heels. Good thing about chunky heels; they make walking much easier!

Cool Prints: Whether it's on a cowboy boot, rain boot, or a fashion boot, prints, florals, embroidery in many colors are lighting up the runway. We carry many rain boot and cowboy boot styles at qvc.com, and Spring Step usually has some fun embellished options like the Parfum Leather Ankle Boots with stacked heel.

So - enjoy your fall boot shopping!! And look for Shoe Shopping With Jane almost every Thursday at 9pm eastern, and every day at qvc.com!

Laptop or a Tablet....Which do I Choose?

$

Now that we've entered back to school time, the classic question is popping up again. Should I be getting a tablet or a laptop for someone who will be hitting the books this fall? It’s a great question to ask! Unfortunately it’s not always an easy one to answer. As technology continues to advance at lightning speed, the power of tablets continues to advance while the portability of laptops makes them much more versatile as well.  Let’s break it down.

Advantages of a laptop

For several years, the laptop has been the go-to choice for high school and college students. A 15" or even a 17” size screen can fit in most backpacks. A hard drive of 500GB or even 1TB of storage means you have plenty of room to store all of your work for several years. The laptop is an ideal choice for someone taking courses in graphic design or video editing where storing large files and running complex programs is necessary. It’s also key to note that laptops continue to become lighter and thinner which makes them much easier to take with you. For example, I have an HP 17” laptop from 4 years ago that weighs more than 8 pounds.  A similar sized HP today comes in at under 5 pounds with a processor that blows the older model away.

Here are some great back to school laptop choices:

13" Apple MacBook Pro

17" Dell Laptop with Microsoft Office

15" HP Touch Laptop with Microsoft Office

Advantages of a tablet

The newer and trendier pick for students is the tablet. With a 9” or 7” screen, tablets are the ultimate in portability. With constant advancements in processing power, today’s tablets have the motor inside to keep up with the laptop world. Tablets will lack in hard drive space, but simply taking notes does not require a ton of storage. Plus, you can back up your data with a desktop, laptop or cloud storage to ensure your notes are safe.

These are some tablets that are ideal for back to school:

 32GB Apple iPad Air

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3

Dell 32GB Android Tablet

Three or four years ago, choosing between a laptop or tablet was easy. The laptop was the choice for work. The tablet was more for play, but that is not the case anymore.  The merger of these two great pieces of technology is moving at lightning speed. My best advice is to take a step back and look at what is being studied. If its mostly a note taking need, the tablet will easily get the job done. For more complex programs, the laptop may be a better choice. Better yet, I recommend that you reach out to the school and more specifically your child’s teachers and see what they recommend. This will guide you towards the best choice for everyone’s  needs.

As always, if you have any questions connect with me on Facebook, Craig Smith for QVC.
